Keeping track of your energy usage

Traditional meter & smart meter

There are two types of electricity meters in Singapore: Cumulative Meter (also known as mehcanical or traditional meter) and Advanced Meter (also known as Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) or smart meter).

The type of meter you have depends on the size and nature of your property. SRLP meter is used mainly by residential households and small businesses; AMI meter is primarily used by large companies and corporations.

The traditional meter

The traditional meter displays your electricity usage but relies on having a person to read the meter and manually enter it into the system.

This is why SP Group representatives come to read the meter in your house (or your business) once every two months. This means your actual usage is measured every two months. When the meter is not read, your usage is estimated and tends to lead to overbilling or underbilling.

During the Circuit Breaker period in 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, no meter reading was conducted. When the meter reading resumes, some people receive a shocking bill. This happens because their electricity consumption is higher than the estimated usage, and they have been underbilled for months. So when their meter gets read, they have to pay the difference. Definitely not the most pleasant experience.

To avoid this, you can submit your own meter reading to SP. There are a few ways to do it:

  1. Via SP Utilities app: Launch the app, go to ‘Explore’ and select ‘Submit Meter’.
  2. Via SP Utilities portal: Log in to the portal, go to ‘Usage’, and then select ‘Submit Meter Readings’.
  3. Via Whatsapp: Snap a photo of the meter and send it to +65 8482 8636. Make sure the meter reading and the meter number is clearly visible.

You can submit your meter readings three days before 5 pm on your scheduled meter reading date.

If you find this troublesome, consider switching to the smart meter. Keep reading to find out how it makes your life a little easier.

What makes a smart meter smart?

A smart meter is, well, smart because it can relay your electricity usage directly to your supplier without having to be read manually. A smart meter makes your electricity bills more accurate and reduces the guessing game. So you will only pay for the electricity your business has used.

A smart meter tracks your usage at half-hourly intervals. It means you can check how much electricity you use at a specific time. It’s handy for businesses with precise operating hours to audit their electricity usage.

Tracking your electricity usage

There are two ways for you to check your electricity usage: via the SP Utilities mobile app and your retailer’s website. Most of the electricity retailer in Singapore allows you to log into your account and check your energy usage via a dashboard or a mobile app.

Flo members can access their electricity usage by going to their Flo Account Dashboard. We provide clear and easy-to-understand energy usage charts so our members can find the information quickly.
